life with less plastic: Shampoo & Soap

I thought I had been conscious about using plastic for years: I avoided taking plastic bags in shops and favoured natural materials when choosing clothes and home decoration items. But some months ago there was a big turning point for me. One evening, after I’d cleaned my face, my favourite moisturizer ran out. I had seen this coming and had a new pump bottle ready in the bathroom cabinet. As I threw the empty bottle into the trash bin it made a sound as it hit the empty metal basket. With the new bottle of moisturizer in hand, it hit me: That old bottle will never go away. It will never biodegrade, and even if it will be out of my sight when the truck comes to pick up the trash next week, it will never disappear. It will be one more piece of plastic waste and contribute to the ever-growing dumps or floating plastic masses in the oceans. It was a realization I couldn’t ignore and I decided to do more to reduce my contribution to …

peppermint & lavender foot bath

I love starting the weekend with some relaxation and an aromatic foot bath is a simple way to include a wellness moment into even an otherwise busy weekend. Here is a simple foot bath for the home-spa. It’s energizing, nourishing and relaxing all at once. Himalayan salt is a source of over 80 trace minerals, plus it releases an unique purifying ionic energy when the salt is mixed with water. Essential oil of Peppermint has a pleasant energizing aroma and creates a cooling sensation on the skin while improving circulation. It’s antifungal properties make it the perfect addition to a foot bath. Lavender relaxes and cleanses. 2 dl of Himalayan salt 5 drops of essential oil of Lavender 5-7 drops of essential oil of Peppermint (you can also add some dried lavender) Mix all ingredients in a jar. Fill a large basin with warm water, add 0,5-1 dl of the foot bath mix into the water and soak your feet in it for 15-20 minutes while you sit back and relax. There is no need …

divine avocado & chocolate face mask

While superfoods work wonders from the inside, there is no harm in turning to the pantry for a luxurious skin treatment every now and then. And that’s just what I did yesterday morning when I felt like giving my skin a beauty boost. This rich face mask feels wonderful and smells divine, leaving the skin moisturized, soft and radiant.  Avocado has important vitamins (C & E) that nourish the skin, oleic acid that moisturizes, regenerates and reduces irritation and it’s antioxidant carotenoids can help to protect the skin from environmental damage. Raw cacao powder is another superfood that your skin will love: Rich in minerals and polyphenol antioxidants raw cacao nourishes the skin and can protect it from premature oxidation (= younger looking skin for longer!).  The healing and moisturizing effects of Argan oil are well-known, so let’s add a drop or two of that too. This recipe makes enough for two people: 2 heaping tbsp of soft, organic avocado 1 heaping tbsp of raw organic cacao powder 1 tsp organic argan oil Mix & stir all ingredients in a small …

rejuvenating yogurt face mask

Natural organic yogurt has multiple recognized health benefits and many of these work on the skin too. High in vitamins (B2, B12, B5) and minerals (Calcium, Zinc), natural yogurt nourishes, hydrates and protects the skin. The anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties as well as probiotics in yogurt can help relieve skin conditions such as acne. Honey softens and moisturizes while oats gently exfoliate the skin and clean pores. Aloe vera (with over 75 potentially active constituents including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, saponins and salicylic acids) has a calming, anti-inflammatory effect and can help skin healing by promoting new cell growth. 1 tsp organic natural yogurt (Greek style goat’s milk yogurt if possible) 1 tsp organic honey 1 tsp organic oat meal ½ tsp aloe vera gel Simply mix all ingredients in a small cup and while you let the oats soften for a few minutes, wash your face with warm water (or do a facial steam to open your pores). Apply the mask on dry skin, sit back and relax for 10-15 min before washing …

DIY: nourishing and anti-aging face mask

No better time to pamper yourself than Sunday. I started this sunny day with yoga and a delicious breakfast, followed by a nourishing home made face mask. Mix 1 tablespoon of organic natural goat milk yoghurt, 1 teaspoon of organic honey and 1/2 teaspoon or organic argan oil. Stir the ingredients well in a small cup, apply on your face and neck and leave it on for about 10-15 minutes while you relax to your favourite music. Your skin will benefit from the nourishing and moisturizing effects of natural yoghurt and honey while argan oil is rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants. Note: The argan oil is not yet mixed in in the pictures, so give it a good stir to make an even mixture before applying the mask.
