Walking through the forest after a lazy, hearty Sunday breakfast. The light is low, the powder snow resting on tree branches falls through the air from the slightest touch. The white ground is imprinted with nightly tracks: foxes, rabbits, mice and squirrels now nowhere to be seen.
Last night in a dream I was walking under the high ceilings of our Brussels apartment. My key still fit the door and the evening light was flooding in like it always did at dinner time. The house was empty, it was resting in the in-between, waiting for new life to put flesh on its bones. We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place, we stay there, even though we go away, someone said. Do those rooms, those streets corners, those cafés and market places carry my reflections? Can something in me be found only by going back there? What would such a meeting be like?
There was something magical about witnessing these young boys taking a swim in the lake. They screamed, they splashed, they jumped and they laughed in the way that one does to welcome the summer.
I woke up on Monday morning to the smell of fresh coffee and my husband singing to himself in the kitchen. We were staying with my mom who had already left for work. When I entered the living room, still rubbing the sleep off my eyes, I noticed the thick fog outside and wanted to get to the lake before we’d lose the magical atmosphere. We were the only two people out on the lake. Cold and quiet. Inner warmth. Fresh air cleansing the lungs. The world, the past and the future, invisible, blurred. Just the breath and the body.
Back, at last! New computer, new Photoshop subscription and new energy. Luckily I had stored the photos from the past couple of months on my camera, so I can start sorting them out now 🙂 Let’s start with an easy-to-prepare goat cheese & beetroot salad recipe from a sunny lunch at the Finnish Archipelago a few weeks back. You could serve this hot or cold, it’s not crucial to have all the ingredients either, feel free to improvise – that’s all part of the relaxed holiday cooking, right? For 2: 1-2 pre-cooked beetroots, cut into thick slices. piece of goat cheese cut into 6 generous slices two slices of dark bread (we had a traditional archipelago bread, but use a bread you like and toast it before constructing the salad if you prefer) 1 scallion washed & sliced pine nuts (optional: toast them in advance on a pan) liquid honey fresh thyme Drizzle some honey over the bread and place a slice on both plates. When I think that I’m riding my bike through the warm misty night in complete solitude, admiring the sleeping fields and quiet skies, I see a moose couple, admiring the sleeping fields and open roads. For a passing moment, the whole world is taken by surprise, gravel crunches under the wheels and I, I smile.
